Last Saturday, 24th of May 2008 was Social Media Breakfast: Singapore 2! The attendee list jumped to about 60 people, of which about 40% were there for the very first time.
As we’re still getting used to the idea of a social media event here in Singapore, there were no presentations or speakers, but ideas of a small round-table discussion are being thrown about for the third installation of SMB.
The crowd was a great mix of students, PR executives, casual bloggers, entrepreneurs and the curious.
For Immediate Release’s Singaporean correspondent, Michael Netzley, also covered the event in FIR #348
A full rundown of blog posts and pictures can be found here, and a video from the breakfast is below.
Education was the word of the morning for May’s Social Media Breakfast Memphis. Presenters highlighted the value and importance of continuing education to keep up with the trends in technology, as well as how educational institutions are utilizing social media.
Joan McGrory, Ph. D, with Southwest Tennessee Community College, explained to the group the growing benefits of continuing education, especially in the realm of technology. While Bryan Berretta, of Lausanne Collegiate School, showed the ways their students and teachers are utilizing social media tools such as social bookmarking, blogs and private social networks to share information and stay connected. Bryan’s presentation can be found here on SlideShare.net.
Both presentations sparked interesting discussions on what social media trends are most effective in various realms. What are your thoughts about connecting social media with education?
The second SMB:Singapore is happening this Saturday and it looks like we’re going to have almost double the participants from the last time! Everyone’s pretty psyched about it, and co-organisers Derrick, Sheylara and myself are definitely going to keep SMB:Singapore around to stay.
In fact, we got Shermeen to create for us a logo that we could use for future Social Media Breakfast events, and here it is with a short write-up:
The logo’s a coffee cup, with the handle and saucer forming the acronym “SMB”. It can also look like a person having a bright idea..with the face/head having 3/4 profile. I’ve opted for sketchy lines, so the logo looks professional enough, yet informal enough to be fun.
On top of that, a brand new episode of The Geek Goddess TV Show will be filmed exclusively on location! Lots of media to be generated, check back next week for links to all of them.
What do you think of our new logo? Will you be in Singapore? Why not drop by and say hi! We’ll be glad to meet you!
Some 90 social media experts, enthusiasts, and newbies packed the Ryles Jazz Club in Inman Square, Cambridge last Thursday morning for Boston’s Social Media Breakfast 7.
The event featured four short presentations on the topic of “hiring and getting hired in the Web 2.0 world,” as well as Christopher S. Penn’s demo of his “power tools” for LinkedIn.
Big thanks to Owen Mack from coBRANDiT VIDEO for recording the main presentations.
Hey everyone, we finally have concrete news on the next Twin Cities Social Media Breakfast. SMB-TC3 will be held at Concordia University in St. Paul on May 16th.
After the fantastic turnout & and small space of the last event, we’ve been looking for a better space for the next one. It seems like there aren’t a lot of places that had what we seem to need for our event. Namely, larger space for 20 or more people, WiFi, centrally located, access to public transportation, and food/coffee.
All the spaces that did have enough space were actual conference facilities that start costing real money. Since this is a free event, we have no good way of paying of a larger space.
So, luckily, a number of people offered to check with the places they work at and we suddenly had a few options. The one that worked out first was at Concordia. Jason DeBoer-Moran works in the IT department at Concordia and was able to arrange a true, full-featured conference room for us to use. It meets all the needs of the group, save the one thing that makes for a good breakfast… food.
So, we’ll be bringing in food ourselves. Anyone who would like to donate a box of bagels, doughnuts, coffee, or fruit tray is welcome to bring it with you, or contact me to coordinate making that happen. Simply direct-message me via Twitter, email me (rickmahn at gmail.com), or message me via the MSBMSP Ning site if you want to “donate-a-doughnut”.
Agenda
So what’s going on at this event? Quite a bit for sure! Since there is open WiFi, space, projection equipment, and (did I mention) space we can do quite a bit.
We’ll be in the Library Technology Center Room 215 for the event. Here’s the location information:
The Concordia University Library Technology Center is located on the north side of the campus, near Concordia Avenue and directly east of the Pearson Theater. The Library Technology Center’s physical address is 1282 Concordia Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55104 Campus map:
I look forward to seeing everyone there! Our Social Media Breakfast Network at http://smbmsp.ning.com now has 50 members and I’d love to see as many people make it in person or via video as possible.
