Social Media Breakfast - Twin Cities 7

Social Media Breakfast - Twin CitiesHi there - Rick Mahn from Minneapolis here! We’ve been working on our next event, and if you’re looking forward to the next Social Media Breakfast? So are we!

We’ll be meeting at the Best Buy headquarters in Richfield, MN again this time and will welcome the co-founder of Blue Shirt Nation, Gary Koelling who’s going to share some stories and background on Best Buy social media initiatives like BSN, Gift Tag and so on.

We’ll also talk about social media "Purists" vs. "Corporatists" in the enterprise, take a quick look at the SMBMSP social media site on Ning, and hear from ThreeVolts about web video. We’ll see you there!

Agenda:

  • Gary Koelling, co-founder of Best Buy’s BlueShirtNation will talk about BSN and GiftTag
  • Group question: Social Media "Purists" vs. the "Corporatists" in the enterprise. What’s your take?
  • Three Volts will talk about web video and it’s use by companies
  • Conferences - Who’s going and why (BlogWorld Expo, DEMO, Defrag, SXSW)
  • Local event/meetup update - what’s coming up & details on SMBMSP8.
  • Social Media Breakfast needs a logo! Lets start submitting samples - we’ll talk a bit and define some requirements.
  • Announcement: We have a bacon sponsor!!!

Breakfast sponsored by:

Sterling Cross Group

Chat:

We’re going to try using a Meebo room that should work better from behind company firewalls. We couldn’t connect to the chat room from the event last time and missed a lot of "back channel" discussions. Let us know what you think!

Video:

We’ll be using our Mogulus video channel again this time, and we expect better video performance this time. We’ll be limiting the number of cams and the number of folks at the event watching the feed while they’re there. This should help the outgoing stream and our recording abilities!

Talking niche networks at Austin’s Social Media Breakfast 2

Jackie Huba leads a discussion on the value of niche communities at Austins Socil Media Breakfast 2

Author, blogger, and word-of-mouth expert Jackie Huba led an engaging discussion on the value of niche communities on Tuesday morning during Austin’s second Social Media Breakfast, held at Genuine Joe Coffeehouse in North Austin.

Jackie kicked off her talk with case studies from Fiskars and Maker’s Mark, two companies who’ve established communities through ambassador groups. With Fiskars, that community didn’t come together around their actual products (such as scissors), but around the hobby of scrapbooking.

Also emerging was a lively discussion around the value of “lurkers” in communities, a topic attendee Kyle Flaherty and Shel Israel have since blogged about.

After the breakfast, Jackie sat down with me for a one-on-one interview to recap the highlights of her talk, including:

  • Why Jackie thinks niche social networks are the “plastics of the future”
  • How customer communities can build loyalty and encourage participation
  • How Fiskars and Maker’s Mark have cultivated brand ambassadors.
  • What to do about lurkers
  • SWOMfest ‘08

Upcoming: Social Media Breakfast Ottawa 3 - Reputation 2.0

After a summer hiatus, we’re back with Social Media Breakfast Ottawa 3!

The theme for this Breakfast is online reputation. What about it? Well, as our guest speaker, PR and web strategist Ryan Anderson says, “You only get one, and it’s yours to ruin.”

Join Ryan as he leads us in an exploration of a social media-enabled world where companies and individuals can use the Social Web to build their reputation and insulate themselves against attacks that would have previously remained private matters.

Ryan will help us understand basic social media monitoring and response practices as well as providing insight on avoiding and dealing with crisis situations online. Topics to be covered include:

  • Monitoring, Understanding and Response
  • Preempting a Reputation Attack
  • Crisis Management and Preparing for the Worst

We hope you can join us at Overlay.TV’s Preston Street area office on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at 7:30 am. Sign up today at http://smbottawa3.eventbrite.com

Louisville’s First Social Media Breakfast Set For Sept. 25

PNC Plaza and Kentucky TowersAfter much harassment from Bryan Person, Louisville is getting on board with the Social Media Breakfast, and we’re doing it in a compelling way that will hopefully inspire others to do the same.

The Social Media Club Louisville will host a Social Media Breakfast Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, from 7:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. at the Jefferson Club in downtown Louisville. But we are inviting people who need to learn the basics of social media and will present a Social Media 101 session.

Through our sponsor, local advertising agency Creative Alliance, we are extending a select number of free admission invitations to several professional groups around town, including the local Advertising Federation and chapers of the Public Relations Society of America, International Association of Business Communicators, American Marketing Association and Society of Professional Journalists. Beyond those free passes, the general public is invited to attend (with an RSVP) for the cost of breakfast, which is $13.

While we know this is a bit out of character for the Social Media Breakfasts that have preceded us, the Social Media Club membership here has insisted our mission be about educating the mainstream and spreading the footprint of social media. The Social Media Breakfast concept fits so nicely into that position, we’re convinced the event will be a success.

So, if you’re in or are planning to be in Louisville on Sept. 25, join us. I’ve told the more experienced social media folks in town it will be a good place to network and find companies looking for help in that realm. At worst, folks can find someone to mentor through the social web’s waters.

If you’d like to come, please RSVP no later than Tuesday, Sept. 23 by emailing the Social Media Club Louisville at smclouisville - at - gmail.com. A full breakfast buffet will be served. The cost of the event is $13 per person. Only cash and check will be accepted. Cancellations after Tuesday, Sept. 23 will be invoiced.

The Jefferson Club is located on the 29th Floor of the PNC Bank Building at 500 West Jefferson Street. The breakfast will be held in the President Founders Room of the Club. Professional attire is recommended.

For more information contact Jason Falls at 502.815.3257 or email the Club at smclouisville - at - gmail.com.

And we’ll happily report back on Louisville’s inaugural breakfast.
