We’re about to produce an official logo for the Social Media Breakfast series, and I’d like to ask for your comments and feedback on the two versions that Mykl Roventine has designed.
Version 1: fork and knife

Version 2: the rooster

The only difference between the two? Version 1 features a more traditional fork-and-knife motif, while Version 2 includes a rooster.
We’ll take comments through Wednesday, May 6.
Note: In a roundabout way, my initial blog post asking for help in choosing an SMB logo has led to this point. The comments on Mykl’s entry (the first of four displayed in that post) late last year convinced me to work with him as the designer, but to make some changes. It’s just taken me a while!

dont like the knife and fork… not sure what it triggers in my mind, but I like the rooster better.
As discussed, the rooster has grown on me – it’s got my vote.
Like Thom, I dig the rooster more. However, I think it should lead – the type treatment does nothing for me. Rooster larger, copy smaller – create an icon that is instantly recognized.
Good luck.
I like the knife and fork. It rather has a pirate look to it with the RSS-looking waves above it. It brings to my mind pirate/guerrilla marketing.
go for the rooster…the knife and fork looks like a skull/crossbones type of thing…
Definitely the rooster. very clever, actually. knife and fork isn’t right fit, first of all, and is kinda cliche with anything food oriented anyway.
Rooster gets my vote.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I dig the rooster.
Rooster ftw.
Definitely the rooster!!
I vote rooster.
Yes, I agree, the Rooster with mental telepathy is the better logo of the two. What will vegetarians think?
The rooster does say “breakfast” to me, but that’s about all it says. Save that icon for your Tyson billboard. The jolly roger with the knife and fork is brilliant. You don’t see the pirate right away, but once you do, the mark is immediately memorable. Gotta go with the pirate.
Serious over analysis here, but the knife and fork says “consumption”.
I would vote Rooster.
I agree – the rooster is my vote. The fork and knife design puts the emphasis on the food, rather than the conversation/networking – which I think is the more valuable aspect of the event.
Cookadoodledo!!
I have to get up at 5:15am to make it to the breakfast at 7:30am. I use my hands for the muffins…so rooster gets my vote.
Rooster all the way!
i like the chicken, but reserve my vote until mykl discloses the gender. is it a hen or a cock?
The rooster just seems to look better. I’m not sure what it is specifically about it though.
After reading all the comments so far, I know I’m in the minority, but I like the knife & fork for the same “pirate” reasons stated above.
Neither. I like #1, 2 or 10 here: http://smbmsp.ning.com/forum/topics/2029643:Topic:64?page=4&commentId=2029643:Comment:3959&x=1#2029643Comment3959
I dont like the fork and knife. I would choose the Rooster maybe add some bacon
It’s killing me to refrain from making the oh, so obvious ‘rooster’ (If you know what I mean…) jokes here.
I like the rooster (erghhh) best!
The knife and fork look.. well I associate it with the military.. that kinda symmetry with the wifi.. and then wifi seems like those stripes.. which.. seems like the wrong sorta associations..
I think the rooster one.. you get its wifi cause you see the other logo right before it..
I kinda feel like for ether of them there’s need for further iterations..
I like the rooster in that I always feel like.. I want to kill the alarm clock any time I’m using it to try and make a breakfast.. like soo many cartoons with the rooster..
What if you had one that was like a plate.. with the knife and fork on the sides.. and maybe the wifi was the plate.. as if how the light was hitting it or something?
Not sure…
Version 1 should be the winner…
The other one is irrelevant to anything we do there!!!
You’ll be fine with #2…until rooster flu breaks out.
Q: What came first, the place setting or the rooster?
A: Who cares, I vote for the Rooster! Yay!
My vote is for the Rooster. Wake me up!
I think I’d prefer two roosters facing each other with sound waves between them. It’d make for a nifty t-shirt.
It’s all about the t-shirt.
I think both icons can work (I like both!), but I agree with some of previous posts – the copy and color overshadows the icons – neither will be visible if the logo is small…
Of the two I’d choose the rooster because it evokes more thoughts of conversation. i.e it looks like the rooster is “speaking” However, food for thought, I’d suggest you give some consideration to whether you need to have any icon (rooster or utensils) at all as part of your logo ? Yes the strong brands like Nike & Coke have an icon as part of their logo but they also spend huge $$’s to drill it into our memory. Ask yourself this question with limited promotion dollars is your logo easier to recall with our without and icon ? My experience is that many of my customers add an icon because they have a weak logo design. Your logo design above is strong without the icon. So by adding an icon are you sure it makes is easier to remember and promote ?
I like the rooster too. Its more abstract than #1 which is what makes it more successful. And they are social little guys, aren’t they?
I like the rooster. Adding an organic element subtly reminds everyone it’s people broadcasting and networking using social media.
While the rooster is clever, it’s *too* clever. I “got it” much faster after viewing the first logo, but had to stitch together the meaning for the second. That said, I’m not wild about the first one either — “piracy” is hardly something you want to be hanging your hat on. If you want the “early riser” connotation the rooster has, why not try a silhouette of a classic double-bell alarm clock instead?
how about a combination of the knife & fork & rooster? no, wait< I ‘m a vegan, that just won’t do!
Rooster all the way… animals are our friends
Rooster.
The rooster gets my vote as well.
It’s not breakfast without the bacon! Can the rooster be eating bacon?
