Social media is still in its infancy and learning to walk fast!

And Milwaukee Businesses “not only want to catch up, they want to stay abreast of what is going on.” Questions on how to develop profiles, to connect, follow or even how to create fans are being asked every day. The larger the company, the more strategic their social media needs. The Milwaukee Social Media Breakfast will cover a “wide-range of topics” regarding social media strategies and new media tools while focusing on how it applies to certain industries, geographic, demographics and more.

We are glad to offer a morning of learning and exchanging in a very comfortable atmosphere at The MOCT RESTAURANT. Enjoy presentations in a warm and professional atmosphere while sitting on Sofas and chairs while sipping a cup of coffee and enjoying a continental breakfast. We selected MOCT to ensure an  “open exchange of conversation and ideas,” while attendees listen and learn from not only the presenter, but also each other.

The Milwaukee Social Media Breakfast Mission:To offer growing businesses in Milwaukee an opportunity to exchange, learn and actively participate in the social media landscape both professionally and personally using the right resources and expertise.

Social Media Breakfast San Diego Session 9

altec-nation_logo_jpg

Social Media Breakfast San Diego had an awesome turn out this month.  Tons of new members attended! The atmosphere was extremely energetic with lots of participation and feedback!  This month’s breakfast was a big success.  Our speaker was Angie Swartz.  Angie is the CEO of Square Martini Media, LLC a consultancy that helps businesses incorporate the power of social media.  She is the host of Twitter Talk Radio and the co-host of Boost Your Business Radio.  She is also the co-owner of Twitter Attraction, and founder of Six Figure Moms ClubTM.  Angie is a CPA and holds an MBA from the UCI Paul Merage School of Business.  She spent 20 years in the corporate world in the telecom, media and public accounting industries prior to starting her own companies.

Angie started off the discussion talking about Square martini media, LLC and how it came to be.  She went on to discuss Twitter Talk Radio, a media outlet that allows you to hear from all kinds of people in terms of their experiences, challenges and successes regarding social media marketing.

She discussed how the show is about allowing others to learn about social media.  How to use the tools and integrate them into an effective marketing plan.  She gave an example of a recent interview she did with Best Buy.  Best Buy allows the opportunity for all their employees to train on social media tools.  When they first launched their campaign they didn’t have it figured out completely, but they decided that as they launched more campaigns they didn’t need to be excellent but rather figure out what strategies would work best for their company and become really good at it.

Twitter Talk Radio’s goal is to take a big company like Best Buy and share on the radio their stories, challenges and successes so that if a smaller company is listening and has had fears in the past about integrating social media into their marketing, maybe they’ll rethink changing their marketing strategy and start integrating a social media plan.  One of the most important goals for Twitter Talk Radio is to teach the listeners basic listening tools which will allow them to sit down with their business strategy model and figure out what their goals and tactics are for the company overall.  Once they’ve figured out how social media lines up with their business strategy, Angie goes on to say, their next step is to help them figure out who will be responsible for starting the listening.

A big thank you to Angie Swartz for coming out to present.

You can view the breakfast at:

San Diego-Social Media Breakfast 9

We also went over our top 10 in 10.  Here is what I pulled:

1. #Breastcancer sets Guinness World record: 100 million overall impressions were estimated.

2. Judges allow Twitter in the courtrooms: Federal Court in Australia has decided judges can decide on a case by case basis if they’ll allow Twitter coverage from within their courtrooms.

3. Google to Launch its own phone: Rumor is it will be released by the end of this year.

4. Apple released new multi touch mouse: Called the Magic Mouse. Comes standard with every Mac.

5. Twitter has reached its 5 billionth tweet: They passed the 1 billionth mark in November and it took them less then 1 year to reach 5 billion.

6. Twitter bug exposes private tweets: Just type, site:twitter.com/*uesername* and you’re in!

7. Daily show and new CNN iPhone app Video: CNN warned viewers to not text while driving. The Daily Shows Jon Stewart noticed an irony. The new iPhone app includes a feature that lets you check traffic reports on your phone while in the car. Stewart used this to his advantage to crack some jokes.  Take a look!

8. Video of Anne Frank surfaces on YouTube: The only existing footage of Anne Frank. Video was submitted to Amsterdam Museum and they’re hoping to bring attention to Anne’s story and diaries and reach a new generation who may be unfamiliar with who she was.

9. 54% of employees banning access to social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Myspace at work.

10. Red Bull and Facebook: Campaign launched to thank their fans on Facebook. They hid red bull shots all over the nation to search for. Great Viral marketing campaign.

BONUS: The Ford Fusion relay race: Campaign is called Fusion 41. 8 selected Fusion owners are selected and able to assemble a team with 4 others.  Over a 3 week period contestants complete challenges .

We ended breakfast with an awesome dance performance by Joe Burrough.  He did 2 break dancing sets for the group to help promote a campaign our sponsor, Altec Lansing has recently launched.

Altec Lansing is a company headquartered in Milford, PA.  For more than 70 years they have been viewed as the worlds most valuable and innovative audio brand and boasts a unique history of innovation that includes the introduction of first talkie film speakers, the first iPod docking station and the first “works with iPhone” speaker system.  They make a wide range of audio systems for the home and office; a line of headphones for personal listening; and the popular line of inMotion speaker systems for portable digital players.

The campaign recently launched is called “Mix Dance Contest”.  You can submit a 60 second video for a chance to gain votes from peers and the top 3 will be judged by a celebrity judge panel, which will include Chamillionaire!  For more information on the contest.

A big thanks to Milano Coffee Co. for having us and a special big thanks to Altec Lansing for sponsoring the event!

This month’s Social Media Breakfast is brought to you by Uptown Uncorked, DimDim, the Portsmouth Tea Company and Custom Scoop.

You already know about Uptown Uncorked, since we are the breakfast maestro each month, and DimDim, who handles the periodic live casting of the breakfasts (note: this breakfast will not be live cast). Let me tell you a bit about our venue, The Portsmouth Tea Company, and our sponsor, Custom Scoop.

Our venue this month is The Portsmouth Tea Company. They will be providing the food and space for this event in their tea room. It should be a unique experience (and they have assured this coffee lover that they do have excellent coffee, but that once I try their tea I may never go back. We’ll see!). A little about the people behind the company:

This company was started by two friends, Jere (Jerett) and
Marshall, who love tea. It was only natural that they go
into business in order to surround themselves with it.
The goal of this company is to create and offer the finest
collection of teas in the world. It is a difference that we
have not found elsewhere and we hope you will notice. The
quality of the leaves, the taste and the experience makes
our company unique.
Never has a simple beverage had so much ability to bring
people together. We think our company offers the best of it
to you.

Thank you to Maria Simos of e-Forecasting who helped facilitate the venue for us!

Our sponsor this month is Custom Scoop. Custom Scoop is a long time supporter of our education efforts with SMBNH, and they have sponsored several of our events both financially and with AV equipment. I’d like to thank them for continuing to be there for us and supporting our efforts whenever they can since we started. A bit about Custom Scoop:

Social Media Breakfast History

On seeing growing demand in this area, I decided to fill the need with a new branch of the nationwide Social Media Breakfast in NH. It isn’t that we don’t love Boston, because we do, but our neighbor to the north is rich in technology and social media, and often overlooked when events are planned. I saw a need for networking opportunities that were easier to get to for the northern tech and social media crowd, and decided to step up and fill it. Because NH itself is a diverse and scattered state, the Social Media Breakfast there will be just a little bit different than the one in Cambridge/Boston. Our first meeting was in January 2009, and was a roaring success.

What is a Social Media Breakfast?

From the official description: The Social Media Breakfast was founded by Bryan Person in August 2007 as an event where social media experts and newbies alike come together to eat, meet, share, and learn. Marketers, PR pros, entrepreneurs, bloggers, podcasters, new-media fanatics, and online social networkers are all welcome to attend.

The breakfast series began in Boston and has now spread to more than a dozen cities throughout the United States and around the world.

How will the Social Media Breakfast in NH be different?

The main difference between Social Media Breakfast NH and other SMBs will be all-inclusiveness. I do not want only social media people and companies to attend, I also want technology types, programmers, coders, tech writers, tech companies and more to attend. As a state that is rich in technology but scattered in distance, I think the best networking and connection making effect will be achieved by combined our different cultures. You never know, as a social media type you might just meet the coder you’ve been looking for to create your dream project if we all come together to connect and to learn from each other!

Theme for the sixth Social Media Breakfast: Reaching Beyond Cultural Divides

The seventh Social Media Breakfast NH (hashtag #smbnh) will be all about topics related to Reaching Beyond Cultural Divides. We plan to talk about social media as it relates to minorites of all types and the disenfranchised, gender roles and other often overlooked or under tapped demographics. In this struggling economy and shifting paradigm we need to be working together to be more successful and better weather the storm. We should be pulling in all aspects of technology, new media, old media and social media to succeed. This meeting will help us lay the foundation for a richer, better education, tech and new media community in NH.

In addition to myself, who will be your host and MC for the morning, you will have three speakers giving three brief presentations on topics relating to the theme for the morning.

Speakers:

• Opening Remarks by Leslie Poston, Uptown Uncorked

• Welcome Remarks by Marshall from Portsmouth Tea

• Sponsor remarks by Custom Scoop

Ari Herzog, running for City Council, Newburyport, on “Dealing with Differing Religions Online”

Anthony Liang, Senior at UNH, “Reaching College Students via Social Media”

Leslie Poston, Founder of Uptown Uncorked, Co-Founder of Film POP! and Founder of SMBNH on “Women and Social Media”

This is going to be a great breakfast!

TO SPONSOR THIS OR A FUTURE SMBNH CONTACT LESLIE POSTON via Twitter, Email or Phone.

Let’s make SMBNH crackle with energy and success! See you there!

Topics of Discussion:

Measuring the Impact of Your Social Media Efforts
Tery Spataro, Digital Director, Proof Digital Media Chicago

Measurement, measurement, measurement: what does it mean in the social media space? Even with something as subjective as social media, there are means for measuring the results of outreach, participation, and reputation. First, it’s all about defining the objective and determining what you want to achieve. Second, it’s about turning those objectives into tangible metrics and then analyzing the results.

The Future of News on the Social Web and its Implications for Marketers
Jonathan Ozeran, Product Manager, Innovation at Tribune Interactive

The social web has radically altered the landscape for collecting, producing and distributing news and information. This holds equally true for traditional media publishers as it does for bloggers, entrepreneurs, academics — essentially anyone interested in having their voice heard. With the rapid and exponential growth of new products, tools, techniques and services, the technological barriers to entry continue to decrease at a dizzying pace. All of these changes have left publishers, marketers and advertisers vying for lead positions by leveraging creativity, ingenuity and social demeanor to dominate and retain the conversation. Our discussion will focus on the advantages and implications of these new tools on a consumer culture becoming increasingly social and visible on the web.

Obama’s Social Networking Strategy: Interpretation & Implementation
Kevin Flynn, Owner, Fly Social Media

During 2008, Kevin spent over 1,000 hours working on the Blogging Team at the National Headquarters of the Obama For America Presidential Campaign in Chicago. Kevin will lead a discussion on interpreting and implementing the Obama For America social media strategy and how it can be adapted into any social media initiative.

Personal and Business Interaction On Social Networks
Tracy Swartz, RedEye reporter and CTA columnist, RedEye Chicago

Are you the face of your company? Do you handle your company’s social media strategy? As the popularity of social networking sites continue to grow, so does the question of where to draw the line between your professional and personal net presence. Tracy will moderate a discussion on how she has successfully created a social media presence while standing within the goals of her company.

Mobile Media: Is the Future as Bright as We Think?
Eric Benderoff, Editorial Consultant, Bendable Media

The Web is becoming increasingly mobile, but the technologies for working and communicating online while on the go are not at all developing like the desktop-based environment familiar to us worker bees. Key differences include: Higher access costs, slower network speeds, unreliable connections, multiple platforms controlled by different service companies and a little trend known as “apps.” Many people believe that mobile development is where the Web was in the mid-1990s. Will it follow the same growth patterns? Be prepared to discuss what’s working, what’s not and what should people pay for content while on the go.
