Social Media Breakfast San Diego-Session 10

Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes: Salads - Soups - Bakery

Wow! Session 10 has arrived here in sunny San Diego.  Our featured speaker this month will be Jessica Crawford.  Jessica is the marketing manager of Birch Aquarium.  Birch Aquarium at Scripps in La Jolla is the public exploration center for the world-renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.  Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the aquarium features more than 60 habitats of fishes and invertebrates from the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest to the tropical waters of Mexico and beyond.  An interactive museum showcases research discoveries by Scripps scientists on climate, earth and ocean science.  Scripps Oceanography was founded in 1903 and has maintained a public aquarium and science museum for more than a century.  More than 400,000 people, including more than 40,000 school children visit the aquarium each year.  The aquarium’s mission is to provide ocean science education to interpret Scripps research and to promote ocean conservation.

Jessica began working at the aquarium back in 2007, after spending several years as a newspaper reporter.  She says, “Working next to the ocean is much better”.  She has a lot of fun Tweeting on behalf of fish!  You can follow the Birch Aquarium on Twitter @birch_aquarium

Jessica’s speech will include how they have integrated social media into their marketing strategy and how it’s helped them promote the aquarium and ocean conservation.

Indy SMB #2: The Great Ghost Blogging Debate

The Great Ghost Blogging Debate

What is Ghost Blogging? It’s blogging performed by a company or person(s) on behalf of another entity. Some say that it’s inherently wrong due to transparency and lack of content coming directly from the source; others say that partner providers are able to act as extensions of their clients, often knowing more about their client’s business than the client themselves.

Whichever side you’re on, join us for a breakdown of the topic in a debate format on December 10th!

The Heat

We’re happy to share that we’ve got two great forces to be reckoned with over this particular topic:

Raquel Richardson (@SilverSquare) – Founder, Principal, and Creative Director at Silver Square Design & Marketing

Ryan Puckett (@RMPuckett) – Communications/PR specialist and freelance writer/editor.

What’s on the agenda?

We’ll keep the event to 90 minutes, focusing on providing attendees with opportunities to meet each other, as well as hear valuable insight from our guest speaker.

  • 7:30 AM Arrival, breakfast & networking
  • 8:00 AM Announcements & introductions
  • 8:10 AM Debate!
  • 8:40 AM Open Q&A
  • 9:00 AM We’re done! On with your day…

Video welcome at the inagurual SMB Des Moines

As this post goes live at 8:00am on Tuesday, November 24, Des Moines, Iowa is kicking off its very first Social Media Breakfast, with a program on the “future of mobile technology.”

I wanted to share a video welcome message that will be played to all the breakfast attendees in just a few minutes. The clip combines a greeting from me with a montage put together by “SMB Traveling Ambassador” Albert Maruggi.

(RSS subscribers: You may need to click through to the original blog post to see this video.)

Many thanks to Verizon Wireless for its sponsorship of this morning’s event and to Nathan T. Wright from Lava Row for taking the organizational reins for the Des Moines chapter.

Recap – Social Media Breakfast Madison – Blogs, Social Media, Website Integration

City of Madison
Image via Wikipedia

First let me say we had several really big first on the November event.

1. Over 50 people attended – Wow!

2. We had coffee and bagel sponsors – Wheeeee!

3. More than just Marivic and I were tweeting the event. Yehaaaa!

This suggests a couple of follow up questions and actions -

1. Can we repeat the attendance?  I don’t know but I already made arrangements for a space three times the size at Talula’s. Nick and Kevin, the owners are so very accommodating.

2. Will someone want to step up and be our sponsors again?  Its really inexpensive and we let you give your 1-2 minute commercial – please send me an email if you are interested.

3. Will we continue to grow the group and make it the premiere social media education group in Madison?  More tweeting caused a flurry of people to join the group afterward and I am still working on followup to the guests who attended.  Since we don’t have a membership fee, its one of the best values in the entire state I think.  This will be especially true if #2 continues to happen.

Wordpress Blogs

Preston Austin gave a down to earth, everyone can understand this, presentation on blogs, blogging, and Wordpress software.  He clearly made the case for using Wordpress whether you use the free hosted version or host on your own.  His slides were fun and cut to the chase.  Everyone had a lot of questions at the end. This is a topic we could go into more detail in the future.

Here are Preston Austin’s slides on Flicker

Integration

Jeremy Fall presented his version of what you can do yourself and what is the best and easy methods to begin to integrated social media into an existing website.  He provided some live demonstrations and showed how very easy it is to bring a Facebook badge onto your blog.  We had some great questions at the end and extended conversations as we wrapped up.

I will post Jeremy’s slides once he let’s me know where they are….
