About Social Media Breakfast Social Media Breakfast was founded by Bryan Person in August 2007 as an event where social media experts and newbies alike come together to eat, meet, share, and learn. The breakfast series began in Boston and has now spread to cities throughout the U.S. and around the world.

ShareThis and the Democratization of Influence

Cincinnati Social Media Breakfast Four attendees heard ShareThis CEO Tim Schigel cover topics including how the web, using tools like ShareThis, is democratizing influence.

Are You Hungry For Social Media?

“People Share What Matters”
ShareThis eliminates the need to cut and paste a URL into an email. Analytics show that sharing goes up eight times with this distributed sharing widget on a site. Perhaps that’s because it also allows you to publish the URL to a variety of social networking sites and send it via email or text message to your personal contact list.

As your RSS feeds turn to noise and overwhelm you, ShareThis helps users more easily discern the value of content through their own network. These friend-curated information flows are a prime example of the democratization of influence. As information and viewers of information grow exponentially, our attention is finite, luckily Forrester research shows that 81 percent of people share to help someone else as opposed to simply broadcasting or promoting themselves. This means sharing is as powerful as it is spontaneous and tools like ShareThis will help us sort through the information glut.

The Future of Sharing
Cincinnati Social Media Breakfast attendees previewed the next iteration of ShareThis as well as some future plans. Perhaps the most exciting news is that, as ShareThis ties into analytic providers like Overture and Google Analytics, a metric for influence can be developed.

PimpMyNews CEO Speaking at Cincinnati Social Media Breakfast

“I heard the news today, oh boy…”

PimpMyNews is a new, free service allowing you to hear the latest news from your personally selected mix of news sources and blogs. Anyone with an MP3 player and Internet access can use it. CEO John Atkinson will be speaking at the next Cincinnati Social Media Breakfast* so we did a quick Q&A with him to give some background on the event’s special guest.

1) PimpMyNews is a great name and service. What’s the inspiration behind each?
My Co-founder Roy Georgia and I used to always struggle to keep up with news and current events. Before starting PimpMyNews, we were both “road warriors” in our previous jobs and we could never find the time to read newspapers, or to tune into scheduled TV or radio news broadcasts. And, using the Internet for news and blogs required us to be at computers- searching, sifting and reading. So, we came up with the idea of a service that would automatically find breaking stories from your favorite sources on the Internet and read them to you wherever you happen to be - kind of like TiVo for news and blogs.

Our users say that the strongest benefit is the “productivity benefit” of being able to get current on their favorite news and blogs by listening on-the-go, while they do other things like, drive, workout, ride the train and more.

After considering over 200 different names, we chose “PimpMyNews” because we feel that it conveys the “personalized news” aspect of the service - and because it seems to get people’s attention ;)

2) How do you determine which news sources you cover?
We pride ourselves on PimpMyNews being a source of solid, trusted and obscure news and blog content.

There are so many news and blog sites out there that “information overload” is a real issue. Technorati reports that it tracks over 112 million blogs world-wide. To arrive at the roughly 1,200 sources we have in PimpMyNews, we reviewed tens of thousands of the world’s most popular blogs and categorized the blogs that passed our editorial review into 59 unique categories. So whether you’re interested in Technology, Politics, Business, Sports, Entertainment or something else, there’s a good chance you’ll find it on PimpMyNews. We also receive a lot of suggestions from users. Anyone can suggest a blog by emailing Feeds AT PimpMyNews DOT com.

3) What’s next for PimpMyNews? Scoble dubbed PimpMyNews as one of the best iPhone apps prior to the 3G release. Any plans to offer PimpMyNews as an application?
Because of the uniqueness of our service, we’ve received a lot of press, for which we’re very thankful. Our current iPhone Web Application works on all iPhones and iPod Touch devices, including iPhone 3G. Anyone with a computer or an MP3 player can also use the service. (Our full site can be accessed at http://PimpMyNews.com , and our iPhone Web App is at: http://PimpMyNews.com/m).

Our goal is to continually increase the mobile platforms we run on. In the near future, we’ll be rolling out a native iPhone application that will be accessible through Apple’s App Store, as well as applications for other mobile devices.

4) What do you think the news landscape will look like five years from now?
There’s never been a more exciting time, or a more volatile time, in the news industry than right now. According to Pew Internet, nearly one-third of Americans now use the Internet for news. Ten years ago, only two percent of us used the Internet for news. The trend of people shifting from “traditional” news sources to “new media” sources will continue and accelerate. Personalized, mobile, social news is the new frontier, and we think that the smart phone explosion - sparked by the iPhone - will bring the market to a “tipping point” in the next couple of years.

Mobile “applications” (versus “sites”) will instantly deliver the exact news you care about from thousands of sources - in the format you desire, no matter where you happen to be. Publishers who have great content and who embrace new digital distribution methods will thrive.

5) What are your personal favorite news sources? Same applies to gadgets (top 3 favorites).
I have the following sources in my PimpMyNews Playlist - I listen to them every day.

TechCrunch - A great source for news on Web 2.0 startups.

Mashable - I love their focus on social networking & social media.

Seth Godin - The world’s best marketer

My number 1 favorite gadget is the iPhone - no surprise there. I’m curious about all of the alleged “iPhone-Killers” being rolled out by the wireless carriers. I’m also intrigued by the Amazon Kindle, but I haven’t purchased one yet.

Good first time turnout for Cincinnati #1 – The Wrap

The turnout at the first Cincinnati Social Media Breakfast must be reflective of the total audience on social networks, passionate, knowledgeable, and committed to sharing with the community, the early adopters if you will.  There were more people than I expected about 20 people, which the Holiday Inn Riverfront graciously accommodated with a separate meeting room, thank you very much. The group covered many topics, which included:

  1. What is more important accuracy or speed? An excellent give and take about how newspapers can allow for greater social media without undermining their main concern of distributing accurate information.
  2. The “Twitter Effect” on reporting, business, conferences, oh just about everything we do.
  3. How blogging and twitter has impacted the lives of people around the table, from finding new jobs to leaving old ones.

Now, here’s an example that I hope others can use about how the community of people work together to raise the level of the entire group. On Tuesday night I tweeted that I’d post a quick wrap up on Wednesday AM. Everyone has stuff to do so what’s here is my contribution, but I used twitter to let everyone know what I was going to do. So one of the attendees Roger Bauer saw my tweet and posted this more detailed (and his own perspective) on the issues discussed at the first social media breakfast in Cincinnati.  Nice. For those of you just looking into social media or attending a breakfast, this is the kind of stuff that happens all the time in social media, whether it’s a group of technology folks, an internal group of employees, customers. (ok enough already, you get the point).

Here is a list of the folks who we were able to capture at the breakfast and their twitter name. In the spirit of social media, this commentary will be added to, refuted, corroborated, etc. etc. etc. by my new and old friends from Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. All the best,

Social Media Breakfast Cincinnati #1 Tuesday, April 29

The first Social Media Breakfast of Cincinnati is on Tuesday, April 29 at the

Holiday Inn Riverfront
Street: 600 W THIRD STREET
Time: 7:30am - 9:00am (casual so drop by anytime in this window)

City: Covington, KY
Map: http://maps.google.com/maps…
Contact Info: 612-325-8126 (Maruggi) or 513-240-0547 (Bergman)

Update: Because of the quick comments back, it makes sense to shoot me an email amaruggi@providentpartners.net just in case we need to set up more tables than I’ve reserved in the hotel restaurant. So thanks Michelle and MandyJ for those comments.

Chris Bergman of Cincinnati and Albert Maruggi (visiting Cincinnati that week), senior fellow with the Society for New Communications Research, kicked around the idea for holding the breakfast after tweeting about it with Daniel Johnson Jr, Cliff Ravenscraft, Krista Neher, and others. There is a good group of corporate marketers, agency and PR practitioners, and technologists in the Northern Kentucky, Cincinnati region and this a chance to create an in-person experience.

A loose outline for the group is:

highlights from the recent NewComm Forum and the Media Relations Summit,

discussion of personal networks and the value they create (aka recent issue of selling twitter profile by Andrew Baron )

Cincinnati area news, events, and people
