Since starting the first Social Media Breakfast in August 2007, Bryan Person has seen the Breakfast idea turn into a franchise, spreading from Boston to over a dozen cities in the US, Singapore and Canada.

What’s a brand without a logo? To that end, the various Breakfast organizers have come up with several options. We’ve been debating the choices among ourselves and we’ve narrowed down the options to the following four. We’d like your help to pick one.

Note: The inclusion of specific cities in the logo are for example purposes only. Each city will have the option to add its own name to the final logo.

The 5th Memphis Social Media Breakfast met Wednesday, August 6th to discuss all the latest and greatest in the world of social networking. Dave Barger, of LunaWeb, Inc., hosted the event at Mantia’s restaurant.

The morning kicked off as Justin McGregor from Southwest Tennessee Community College gave a great presentation that put RSS (Really Simple Syndication), “in plain english.” This led into a group discussion/Q&A on the RSS tools that are available now and what the market might hold for future syndication sites. Barger wrapped up the meeting with quick overview of LinkedIn and FriendFeed.

Attendees ranged from old social media pros to several fresh faces just learning to take advantage of Facebook. Thanks to a good breakfast and even better discussion, first timers and regulars to the Social Media Breakfasts were able to walk away with something new to bring to their business.

Each breakfast has the same routine: time flies, agenda never followed, discussion goes on and on. Sounds perfect, huh? Although the primary topic hasn’t been chosen yet for this week’s breakfast, we can be sure we’ll have another morning of stimulating social media-related conversations going around the room!

SMB Memphis is still utilizing MeetUp.com for RSVPs and Facebook for idea discussions, photos, videos and recap, which has been working great so far!

Education was the word of the morning for May’s Social Media Breakfast Memphis. Presenters highlighted the value and importance of continuing education to keep up with the trends in technology, as well as how educational institutions are utilizing social media.

Joan McGrory, Ph. D, with Southwest Tennessee Community College, explained to the group the growing benefits of continuing education, especially in the realm of technology. While Bryan Berretta, of Lausanne Collegiate School, showed the ways their students and teachers are utilizing social media tools such as social bookmarking, blogs and private social networks to share information and stay connected. Bryan’s presentation can be found here on SlideShare.net.

Both presentations sparked interesting discussions on what social media trends are most effective in various realms. What are your thoughts about connecting social media with education?

All attendees, even the newbies, participated at a high level, whether it was exchanging a new idea, bringing forth questions or admitting when they needed a little more explanation of a new tool or social network! The constant conversation and the open-flow of new ideas represent the spirit of the un-conference, which is highly encouraged at the breakfasts. We look forward to next month’s meeting and, as always, are hoping to keep the conversation wheels turning in our online communities!

This afternoon, things are gearing up for tomorrow morning’s 2nd Social Media Breakfast Memphis! Our first breakfast, held last month, had a good turnout and the RSVP list is steadily growing for the next one.

To spread the word about the breakfasts in Memphis, we use MeetUp.com for RSVPs. It’s a great tool and an easy direction in which to point registrants. We also use our Social Media Memphis group on Facebook to facilitate discussions among the members. Closer to the date of the breakfast, we create an event in Facebook to take advantage of its viral component among Facebook users.

Tomorrow’s breakfast will include a panel discussion about Web analytics, social media measurements and tools such as Google Analytics and Facebook’s Ad Analytics. Most likely, that will lead into a discussion about strategy, which could easily spill over as a discussion topic for next month’s breakfast! Memphis is taking full advantage of the productive conversations and networking being done through the Social Media Breakfasts.
