Background: The New North Social Media Breakfast was founded in March 2009 by Dana VanDenHeuvel of Marketing Savant in partnership with Weidert Group, Inc. and Element. The group of local professionals meet monthly, rotating between Green Bay and Appleton locations, to discuss how social media is impacting their businesses. To cater to the diverse needs of this growing group of professionals, the New North Social Media Breakfast has burst out of the coffee shop setting and into the community. The breakfast will now be held at various local businesses each month with a panel that will discuss how social media is impacting their industry.

The event is free and open to anyone who wishes to attend. More information can be found at The New North Social Media Breakfast Ning group.

New North Social Media Breakfast Recap & Press Coverage

twitter_appletonpcOur most recent social media breakfast in Appleton, WI effectively doubled in size from a nascent group of 12-15 to a group of nearly 30. The topics of the event were divided between a discussion of some of the questions that came up from our “What the *Tweet*” event in Green Bay and an in depth discussion of the nuances of Twitter.

We always ask the group to go around and do some quick introductions and to share the ‘question of the day’ that they brought with them to the event. Much of the information that people are seeking is to know more about what others are doing with social media in the area. I suppose that the SMB is a great place to learn that sort of thing!

We’ve set a date for the next meeting of July 9th. We’ll be doing our first actual ‘presentation’ by sharing a few examples of ’social media toolkits’ that people are using to leverage social media for their business.

In other news, the group also garnered some nice media coverage of the event in the Appleton Post-Crescent with an article entitled “Appleton’s Social Media Breakfast shows how businesses can ‘tweet’ their marketing“. It was some nice press for the group!

NEW North Social Media Breakfast 3 – June 4th – Atlas Coffee Mill & Café in Appleton

newnorthsmb100We’ve confirmed the breakfast location in Appleton with the Atlas Coffee Mill & Café on the Fox Riverfront in downtown Appleton. Here’s a link to the location on their site: http://www.atlascoffeemill.com/location.htm

They will provide table service (usually a walk-up counter) and a custom menu for our group free of charge.

We’ll be forming an agenda based on some of the questions that came from the last breakfast in Green Bay and from the “What the Tweet is Social Media” event on the 19th.

This event was put together by Abby and Greg at Weidert Group (www.weidert.com) in Appleton.

See you all there!

NEW North Social Media Breakfast May 5th

NEW North Social Media Breakfast May 5th at a’Bravo BistroIf you joined us for the last breakfast, you know that it was a good core group of smart people talking about social media!  See you on Tuesday!

May 5th from 7:30 – 8:45. If you have to come in a bit later or leave a bit earlier, that’s OK. I want to make sure that we can work around work hours, to some extent. They normally open at 8:00AM so the sign may not read open, but the door will be for us.

Thanks and hope to see you all there.

Recap – New North Social Media Breakfast 1

We had a great group of about a dozen people from the Appleton & Green Bay area at this inaugural meeting of the New North Social Media Breakfast.  It was a lively discussion with some great ideas shared and, as is often the case in social media discussions, we left with as many new questions to think about as we did answers!newnorthsmb100

What was most interesting about the group (and it was an interesting group!) was that we came from such diverse backgrounds. Education, non-profit, healthcare, real estate, ad agencies and so on.

We discussed the topic of what organizations need in terms of social media expertise at the ‘corporate’ level and concluded, albeit at odds with the article that instigated the discussion, that social media expertise is critical to have within an organization, and more importantly, that the social media expertise should be distributed throughout the organization, not held in the hands of the default guru in the organization.

Kiar, @macdesign13, had a great point about FOCUS! In order to ‘do social media well’, we need to focus on the tools that matter to us, and to our audience, and then put energy into those.

Thanks again to everyone who attended and contributed to the discussion!  Thanks also to Abby, @abbyweidert, and Greg, @greglinn of the Weidert Group for signing on as co-conspirtors to help grow the group and keep it together!

Check out the New North SMB Ning group for the ongoing conversation of the group.  Our next meetup will be on May 5th – location TBD.
