Change the World 2.0

The upcoming NYC Social Media breakfast is on June 3 at 8:30 am and has some pretty impressive speakers in the line up. Each of them followed their passion and the results so far have been profound. While the social web is in its infancy, and will only continue to spread and harness the power of community, the people laying the groundwork are doing a pretty smashing job. I was a Twestival organizer in NYC and in Boston, and in one day this past winter, utilizing social media, we collectively raised $250, 000 USD.  Margaret Mead’s famous words, “A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has” rang through my mind as we worked to raise awareness for Charity: Water, foster community on Twitter, and fundraise in the hopes of providing clean water to people who are in need. I’m excited to hear the stories the speakers at the next breakfast have to share, and we hope you are to.

Social Media Week NYC

This week is jam packed with all things social media in NYC, not surprisingly, since the week has been dubbed Social Media Week NY. There is not a panel out there, that  you can’t find in the city this week to quell your social media appetite.

Tomorrow will be a landmark day in a variety of ways, not only are the Shorty Awards taking place tonight, they are followed up bright and early with SMBNYC4 in the morning…if you have your tickets already, you are in luck, as the event is sold out-the seats went like hotcakes! The good news is, we will be live streaming the event so if you don’t have a ticket, you can still be part of the event.

If that weren’t exciting enough, tomorrow night’s encore is Twestival. If you haven’t heard of this yet, Twestival is a global event happening in 100+ cities to come together via social media to rally around Charity:water.

This video from Charity: Water Founder, Scott Harrison, will give you an idea of what this is all about, pretty exciting stuff going on here: Charity: Water

How do you build a brand that is sustainable and fluid for you and your brand?

SMBNYC3 Theme: Social Media in 2009 | Engagement, Brand Equity & Measurement.
This event will feature a series of fifteen-minute presentations with Q & A, breakfast and networking.

Engagement is the cornerstone to building brand equity for your company and to reach your audience. Brand equity is defined as the “degree to which a brand is believed to be able to meet or exceed customer expectations for the category” (Dr. Robert Passicoff, Brand Keys, NY). A successful engagement results in increased brand equity.

Companies are beginning to understand the importance of engaging their customers directly. Knowledge sharing, two-way conversations, and the creation of valuable digital content have helped companies propel their brand as an engaged and trusted source. Engagement strategy can also improve SEO rankings and inbound marketing efforts leading to increased opportunities. How are you engaging? Are engagement and brand equity measurable? The following presenters will discuss their learnings from 2008, and where they are headed in 2009.

Speakers

1) Jessica Valenzuela, Founder and CEO, Mavin Digital

2) Roger Wu, Co-Founder and President, Klickable.tv

3) Grace Piper, Producer & Host, Fearlesscooking.tv

SMB NYC 2 wrapup

This morning LiveWorld sponsored New York’s second Social Media Breakfast and brought together a sold-out crowd of social media types for the accustomed mix of coffee, conversation and camaraderie.

Liveworld’s Bryan Person, the founder of the Social Media Breakfast movement, flew in from Austin to spark the event, and also followed up with a great video reflecting on the morning from NYC’s beautiful Bryant Park. The video is below, and to get a real time feel for the event, check out all the live tweets.

,

A huge thank you to Paul Borgese from the Associated Press who gave a thought-provoking presentation that sparked a great deal of questions from the audience. Aaron Uhrmacher and Selina McCusker also put a great deal of time and effort setting up the event. Finally, an important thank you to all the New Yorkers who dragged themselves out of bed on a drizzly Manhattan morning to join us.

Further SMBNYCs are in the pipeline. If you’re a New Yorker and you’d like to assist us with planning, speakers or sponsorship for future events please feel free to reach out directly to myself or Aaron Uhrmacher. After this event sold out in a matter of hours it’s seems like the SMB are even hotter than the Knicks (thankfully we’ve also got a better record…).

SMB NYC Kicks Off New Conversations

IMG_1930 Today’s inaugural Social Media Breakfast in New York (SMBNYC) brought together 30 social media professionals for easily the best diner breakfast New York has to offer.

The assembled group mingled over eggs, granola and "McDaddy’s" while Eric Krangel, who goes by the avatar Eric Reuters in Second Life,  talked about his experiences as a virtual world reporter.

Overall, it was a chance to meet many new people in my social media community, and also to meet friends face-to-face I had only known from Twitter. The best part is, I have a lot of new blogs to start following!

Converseon posted pictures and B.L. Ochman has a nice recap.

Thanks to Text 100 and Converseon for sponsoring the event.

First NYC Social Media Breakfast With Special Guest Eric Reuters

SMBNYC I attended the third social media breakfast in Boston earlier this Fall. It was pretty cool connecting face-to-face with people I had only met online through my social networks, and hearing how other social media professionals are approaching these new platforms for communications and community building.

It was there that I met Bryan Person, who really understands the myriad ways social media is changing our work. I must have made some off-hand comment about how we could use one of these in New York. I didn’t mean that I wanted to organize it, per se, just that "it would be cool if SOMEONE did."

A few weeks later, I was exchanging emails with Paull Young from social media agency Converseon, who also thought it was a great idea, and "it would be cool if SOMEONE organized one in NYC."

That "someone" turned out to be us.

So if you’re interested in learning more about social media and connecting with other New Yorkers working in this space, come on down and join us next Tuesday, December 12 at 8:00 AM at Big Daddy’s Diner near Union Square for some coffee, eggs and conversation. You must be registered to attend

Our special guest will be Reuters technology reporter Eric Krangel (avatar Eric Reuters), whose current beat includes the virtual world of Second Life

The breakfast is FREE, courtesy of Text 100 and Converseon.

Since seating is tight, participation is limited to the first 30 registrants.

You can reserve your seat and find more details here.

We hope you’ll join us!
