Social Media Breakfast Ottawa 6

Kung Hei Fat Choy! Today is the beginning of the Chinese New Year! The traditional belief is that an individual’s personality and temperament is reflected by the animal representing his/her birth year along with its associated elements. So, by the Chinese Zodiac – it’s the Year of the Earth Ox! Traits of those born under the sign of the Ox (e.g. American President Obama) include patience and hard work – qualities we’ll all need in a year of difficult global economic conditions.

Patience and hard work have also been what we needed while programming for this new year of Ottawa Social Media Breakfasts. We’ve had some fits and starts with concerns due to a season of cold weather and transit strike related woes. But, we’re back and happy to announce our next Breakfast event! Here are the details:

What:  Social Media Breakfast Ottawa 6

When:  Friday, February 20th, 2009 – 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM

Where:  Gowlings, 160 Elgin Street, 26th Floor, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

How:  Purchase your ticket at http://smbottawa6.eventbrite.com

And who is our February Breakfast guest speaker? It’s Stuart MacDonald, CEO and Founder of Tripharbour. Continue reading →

Recap: Social Media Breakfast Ottawa 5

Social Media Breakfast Ottawa 5’s recap post is authored by Melany Gallant (who is graciously helping me out given that I did not take proper notes). The item is cross-posted to Melany’s blog.

Sourcing the crowd at SMB Ottawa

Well the weather sure can put in a wrench in things (so can transit strikes but that’s a whole other story.) Bryan Person, planned guest speaker for today’s Social Media Breakfast (SMB) Ottawa event got stranded in Boston. After three flight cancellations he had to admit defeat. He wasn’t going to make it.

Disappointing as that is, today’s event was still great. Organizers rallied and brought together Joe Thornely of Thornley Fallis and ProPR.ca and moderator James Lewis (Executive Director of the Canadian Interactive Alliance) to lead a discussion on social media happenings in 2008.

Marketing guru Seth Godin has blogged that the ‘Online Community Organizer’ would be the number one job of the future:

“Somebody to create and maintain a virtual world in which all the players in an industry feel like they need to be part of it . . . Like being the head of a big trade association, but without the bureaucracy and tedium . . .

If you were great at this, I’d imagine you’d never ever have trouble finding good work.”

For Breakfast 4 hosted by our new series sponsor – Gowlings – we’ve found some Ottawa greatness for you and will be bringing together a panel of experts to talk about Online Communities:

Recap: Social Media Breakfast Ottawa 3

Ottawa’s third Social Media Breakfast, sponsored by the Chicken Farmers of Canada, took place two weeks ago with some sixty attendees surviving the Preston Street gauntlet to gather at the offices of Overlay.TV. Not only was there the seemingly never-ending street construction to navigate but we had no coffee! Said construction activity happened to cut through a pipe that supplied water to our friendly neighborhood Starbucks! Undaunted, we were rewarded with an interesting presentation about Reputation 2.0 from PR and Web Strategist Ryan Anderson.

It happens that I was waiting for Ryan to send me his presentation slides before writing an event recap. Instead, Ryan posted a great summary at his blog – The New PR. As there is nothing new for me to add, I’ve asked Ryan for (and received) his permission to cross-post his entry. I’ll be writing again before the end of this week with some announcements about our Breakfast 3 contest winner, our new season sponsor and details about our October Breakfast.

Upcoming: Social Media Breakfast Ottawa 3 – Reputation 2.0

After a summer hiatus, we’re back with Social Media Breakfast Ottawa 3!

The theme for this Breakfast is online reputation. What about it? Well, as our guest speaker, PR and web strategist Ryan Anderson says, “You only get one, and it’s yours to ruin.”

Join Ryan as he leads us in an exploration of a social media-enabled world where companies and individuals can use the Social Web to build their reputation and insulate themselves against attacks that would have previously remained private matters.

Ryan will help us understand basic social media monitoring and response practices as well as providing insight on avoiding and dealing with crisis situations online. Topics to be covered include:

  • Monitoring, Understanding and Response
  • Preempting a Reputation Attack
  • Crisis Management and Preparing for the Worst

We hope you can join us at Overlay.TV’s Preston Street area office on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at 7:30 am. Sign up today at http://smbottawa3.eventbrite.com

The podcast behind the podcast at SMB Ottawa 2

Ottawa-based podcaster Mark Blevis, who’s also the co-founder of Podcasters Across Borders, has released a “producer’s commentary” that takes listeners through some of the audio techniques and editing decisions he made when putting together a podcast for Ottawa’s Social Media Breakfast 2, which was held last month and featured a presentation about community-based online video from Overlay.TV CEO Rob Lane.

Mark is a brilliant audio editor and producer, and his under-the-hood insights here are well worth listening to.
