Journalists are now using avenues like Twitter and Facebook as sources for stories, but there is also another layer. In the past, the relationship you had with a reporter was based on watching, listening or reading. Now the relationship is a two-way conversation. Reporters are interacting directly with their audience, and it’s having a significant impact on the development of the story as well as on how the audience interprets it.

As we head into fall we’re gearing up for some fantastic Social Media Breakfasts in San Antonio. And we’re going to make it even easier for you to remember when and where you can join us each month.

Social Media Breakfast San Antonio takes place on the THIRD WEDNESDAY of every month. Starting with October we’ll begin rotating our location between two favorite San Antonio breakfast eateries. In October you’ll find us downtown at Madhatter’s on Beauregard. In November we’ll be back at The Egg & I on 281/Thousand Oaks at Park Oaks Shopping Center. And that means in December we’ll be back at Madhatter’s for our last Social Media Breakfast San Antonio gathering of the year.

Social Media Breakfast San Antonio #10:
Healthcare & Social Media

With the talk in every U.S. town these days focusing on healthcare reform it’s only fitting that we discuss the important and growing role of social media in healthcare. This month we’ll hear from three people on the front lines of incorporating social media into healthcare in a myriad of different ways:

Beverly Ingle with Guerra DeBerry Coody (@GDCinspires)

Beverly will discuss GDC’s participation in The Third Rail of Healthcare: Cost, an event that took place on August 29th in Nashville, Tennessee. While hundreds of people participated at the actual event, over 700 viewers from across the U.S. and the world also participated via webcast. She’ll share social media’s role in turning this event into a global townhall meeting.

Shelley Cook with KCI (@ShelleyRae)
Shelley is an enthusiastic and tireless champion of social media. She’s conducted research on both the legal and ethical challenges healthcare companies face when engaging in social media. Fresh from her recent trip to the Social Media Healthcare Conference in Washington D.C. Shelley will be a veritable fountain of healthcare/social media information and we’re excited and fortunate to have her share her experiences from the conference with SMBSA.

Jay Evans, Avante Practice Management (@AvantePM)
Jay is the owner of AVANTE Practice Management where he assists physicians with practice start-ups, business development, clinic operations, marketing and promotion, managed care contracting, billing and A/R management. Jay will share his experiences of using social media to connect with physicians and the community at large as he promotes his business and learns how he can help his clients use social media to further theirs.

RSVP

Visit our TWTVite page to RSVP for Social Media Breakfast San Antonio on Wednesday, October 21 at Madhatter’s from 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. We look forward to seeing you there!

The 2008 U.S. Presidential election was a watershed event with social media racing to the forefront of the most successful campaign strategies. Candidates created Facebook and MySpace pages, established Twitter profiles and communicated with constituents via Web sites chock-full of live-streaming video, podcasts and more. Now you can get a more local perspective and look at how social media is impacting the 2009 San Antonio Mayoral Race. What role are these now-well-known tools playing in the local campaign? You’ll hear from the experts managing the social media presence for some of the top candidates in the race, as well as an independent expert who’s covering them all.

In February, Social Media Breakfast San Antonio’s topic was, “The Media in Transition”. We had representatives from the San Antonio Business Journal, San Antonio Express-News, San Antonio Current and KSAT 12 News. Donna Tuttle, Laura Lorek, Elaine Wolff and Joe Ruiz shared how Social Media has changed not only how they gather news, but also how it has impacted their industry.

We captured the conversation on the Social Media Breakfast San Antonio Ustream channel.

The conversation began with stats for the respective publications and broadcasts. It quickly transitioned to how Social Media is changing journalism. There was a lot of energy and excitement around the increased accessibility of news sources and breaking news. At the same time there was the fear factor and monetization discussion. Given the online push, there is a disconnect between ad dollars in print distribution vs. ad dollars in web distribution. How journalists, newspapers and television broadcast news are making the transition along with the real discussion of how to continue to generate revenue.

It would be fair to say that the overall consensus was that journalism as we know it has changed. While it is an exciting time to be part of the “traditional media”, there is a huge shift in how the industry will continue. The distance between news happening in the world and the time it takes to report the news shrinks. The news media are not the only ones being affected by this transition. Education, big business, government and the non-profit sector are all dealing with the fast pace of the internet coupled with the slowing of the economy. These are topics we will be addressing at future Social Media Breakfast San Antonio events.

SMBSA photo courtesy of Joe Ruiz , Live streaming video by Leslie Baldwin aka Springanew, A special thanks to Social Media Breakfast San Antonio intern Penny Muckleroy for facilitating this month’s event.
