Social Media Breakfast Toledo: Be a Resource

David Murray thinks your business should be a resource and not just a source of information. What does your business think?

David led Social Media Breakfast Toledo  last week in the beautiful Green Room at the Toledo Museum of Art. More than 50 other entrepreneurs, business people, and social media types gathered for a breakfast conversation.

Murray, Director of Social Web Communications for The Bivings Group of Washington D.C., said that the principles that govern online relationships are no different than the ones that govern offline ones. His talk was the seventh event in the SMB Toledo series, which began in 2009.

Social media might be characterized by a common set of actions rather than tools. Stressing about covering every platform from Facebook, to Twitter, to Flickr, to YouTube, to Ning, misses the point. Instead of shouting and interrupting, you should be monitoring, focusing, and building a conversation about you and your business.

Here’s your 4-point takeaway (in addition to breakfast):

Do great things by simply sharing useable, actionable content.

One week after the July 4th holiday and on top of another pleasant Friday morning we had another full room at the Elks Club to hear Ellyn Davidson speak on Weaving a Web(2.0) for Success: How social media is changing the non-profit world.

Davidson, a 15-year partner of Brogan & Partners and who recently joined Ignite Social Media, shared several case studies on how various types of social media can be effective in the non-profit sector.

Thanks again for your tremendous support and interest. We hope to see you our regular social media tribe at upcoming events on Linkedin and using social media in your job search (August) and social media legal issues (September).

SMB Toledo: Social media can be the spark for non-profits

How can you rally small, but passionate tribes of people around a non-profit cause?

Join Social Media Breakfast Toledo and host Ellyn Davidson on July 10 for Weaving a Web(2.0) for Success: How social media is changing the non-profit world.

Ellyn Davidson

Davidson, a 15-year partner of Brogan & Partners and who recently joined Ignite Social Media, will be speaking about how various types of social media can be effective in the non-profit sector. She’ll bring several case studies on how non-profits have used social media to achieve goals.

After a breast cancer diagnosis a few years ago, Davidson used her blog and created a Facebook page to keep family and friends updated on her health, treatments and state-of-mind. She found a passion, enthusiasm and a great understanding of the power of social media and discovered that if used wisely social media could:

* Deepen engagement with constituents, volunteers, philanthropists, and staff

* Rally small, passionate groups around a non-profit cause

* Facilitate collaboration and teamwork

* Develop listening efforts to identify vocal critics and enthusiastic supporters

Davidson received a BBA in Marketing and Operations Management from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an International Business Specialization from the London School of Economics.

Social Media Breakfast Toledo is lucky to have shared three events so far with our own SMB panel, Aaron Newman and Dave Rigotti. Register now and join us and Ellyn Davidson for the July 10 (7:30 a.m.) Social Media Breakfast Toledo at http://smbtoledo4.eventbrite.com.

Social Media Breakfast Toledo on business blogging

Dave Rigotti was the featured speaker at our third Social Media Breakfast Toledo event at the Toledo Elks Club. Rigotti spoke on the Do’s and Don’ts of Business Blogging.

There was more conversation, coffee and pastry when Social Media Breakfast Toledo staged its second event Friday at the Elks Club. We moved to a featured speaker format with Aaron Newman of Techrigy. Newman spoke to a full house of local social media fans about social media monitoring and measurement.

Newman is the founder of Techrigy and is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading database security experts. Techrigy SM2 is a versatile and powerful software tool to analyze online conversations. It also offers a full range of reporting options from high level reports down to fully actionable results.

We loved the information that Aaron provided and the fact that when prompted to show his company website during the Q&A session, Aaron politely declined the self-promotion in true social media fashion. Add value, share your ideas and the rest will follow.

SMB Toledo thanks the over 60 people who attended our event and also to our friends on Ustream.tv, including Connie Bensen, Techrigy’s social media manager, who gave me the snow update from Minnesota.

Look for Dave Rigotti at our June event in Toledo. Dave is an award-winning online marketer of over nine years, whose works have been mentioned in such publications as The L.A. Times, Techcrunch, Cleveland Plain Dealer and others. Dave, who was part of the panel for SMB Toledo No. 1, is also the owner of an internet marketing company called Freezing Hot.

Galen Bennett of Website Optics was the Elks Clubs room sponsor for May’s SMB Toledo.

Like all of us out there learning social media – and social media breakfast planning – we are not experts. We have staged only two events so far. Tell us how to improve our SMB Toledo events?

Toledo’s first Social Media Breakfast

Social Media Breakfast Toledo staged its first event on April 3 in Toledo.

SMB Toledo

Team SMB Toledo with Patrick Giammarco, Janeile Cudjoe, Julie Cantu, Tim Langhorst, Dave Rigotti, Damian Rintelmann, Kevin Cesarz, Allen Mireles, Mike Driehorst, Michael Temple, Steve Robison and Victoria Kamm began planning for the event in January.

Thank you to all in the Toledo-area social media community for coming and making this such a success. We had 79 people attend the inaugural event at the Elks Club on Holland-Sylvania Rd. near Wildwood Metropark, and another 67 followed live on Ustream. Toledo’s WTOL provided the bright lights and TV interest that began before dawn on a rainy Friday.

Our panel of Victoria Kamm, Allen Mireles, Dave Rigotti and Damian Rintelmann were led by Michael Temple through a discussion of such topics as attracting new customers with social media, retaining existing customers with social media, and market research to learn what customers want through conversation.

The panel worked through questions on Twitter, LinkedIn, Ning and other social media platforms, citing personal experience on tactics, tools and trends.

There was no way to cover all things social media in the one hour time frame so we look forward to your comments on Twitter, Ning and other platforms to improve for the next event on May 1, also at the Elks.
