Waco Social Media Breakfast #wacosmb – August 31, 2010 – Notes by Karla Patterson @video7
Presenter: Elmer Boutin @rehor
Elmer has been the webmaster for Wilsonart since 2000. He has worked in the industry since 1996. Wilsonart makes countertop laminates.
His blog: www.crossingmarketingandit.com
Wilsonart develops their Social Media Marketing with a strategy in mind. It is more effective to determine several criteria before creating any social marketing plans.
Who is your audience?
What do you want to say to them?
Where is your audience going to view your information?
Look at your marketing goals with this in mind. Don’t be in a hurry. Plan first.
Social Marketing is about making connections with people. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Build a following that will engage with you.
Think “Crock Pot” vs. “Microwave”. Crock pot meals are cooked slowly and taste delicious. Microwave meals are quick, but often lack flavor.
Listen for customer service issues, and what customers are talking about. It is important to handle issues in a positive manner. Listen for “bad press” and respond appropriately.
Responding badly can backfire in a large way.
Check Yelp for reviews about your company. Social Media Tracking: Tracker and Radiant 6.
He uses Tweetdeck and Google Alerts to keep track of conversations about his company.
By following what is being talked about online, they have discovered a number of people who need their products, but do not know where to purchase them. They are able to provide these customers with appropriate resources.
They are able to answer questions about their products.
As a bonus, they have also discovered unusual ways that customers use their products. For example: Many people use one of their laminate products to create an inexpensive projection screen.
Recommended book: Radically Transparent by Beal & Strauss
Tactics – Weave and cast a bigger net.
Their website has info that is more stable, and their other online activities lead people to their website. They also link back and forth.
Wilsonart has multiple audiences, and they provide specific information for the needs of each different audience.
They have multiple websites, one Twitter account, one Flickr account, two Facebook accounts, 2 blogs, 3 YouTube channels, forums and other sites. They also sponsor blogger conferences.
Advice – Be easy about it. Avoid burnout. Build a team if possible.
Building a team for blogging includes outsourcing.
Social Marketing is an ongoing process. They have plans for more channels, additional teams, and they watch for new opportunities.
Their call centers keep a database of frequently asked questions. They try to incorporate their “experts” knowledge into their marketing. This helps them address those questions, and build relationships.
Carl Flynn won the door prize.

- Improve customer sentiment by 30% in three months; and
- Reply to 100 percent of Amazon Quickbooks Pro 2010 reviews, which resulted in a double digit % increase on sales.

Four months ago, Ford Motor Company gave Dave Brown and his buddy Zack Nielsen (of Sezio) a 2011 Ford Fiesta, a gas card, a fully loaded Macbook Pro and a Canon SLR. The only catch was they had to spend Ford’s money on a variety of creative missions all over San Diego. Fast forward four months months and they’ve successfully promoted multiple independent businesses, added art to a local neighborhood, threw a massive concert for an unsigned band, designed a clothing line for pro athletes and made a short film highlighting their amazing city. In total, they’ve logged 15,000 miles and pumped over $50,000 into San Diego. Thanks Ford, Dave Brown and Zack Nielsen for sharing this story.

This week, before Savell’s formal presentation (plug: Tuesday, June 15th 7:30 a.m. at MRM Worldwide; register here), I sat down with her for a more informal chat to uncover her take on social media measurement, analysis and strategy.
