Testing UStream/Facebook video stream and chat at Tuesday morning’s SMB Waco 7

Starting at 8:00am Central Time tomorrow morning, we’ll be (fingers crossed) video live streaming, through UStream, a presentation from Tim Walker at Waco’s Social Media Breakfast 7.

We’ll also be testing out the Live Stream Box that Facebook released to publishers and developers last week.

I’ve wrangled together a page that will display the UStream feed and Facebook chat box side by side. To participate in the chat, you’ll need to use Facebook Connect.

Wrap-up post: Panelists talk content marketing at Austin’s Social Media Breakfast 7

Panelists Simon Salt, Natanya Anderson, and Lionel Menchaca and moderator Aaron Strout led an engaging discussion on the value of content marketing for brands at Austin’s 7th Social Media Breakfast, held Friday morning, May 8th, at la Madeline Country French Cafe in North Austin.

Some of the highlights:

  • Aaron (@AaronStrout), CMO at Powered, noted what what good content marketing is not: “a company trying to force its tongue down your throat” as soon as you introduce yourself.
  • For Simon (@IncSlinger), the CEO of IncSlingers, the challenge for brands is to produce not just “good content” but “social content,” where the ownership of the content is actually unclear. A good example: Disney’s Moms Panel.
  • Natanya (@NatanyaP), VP of Content of Powered, explained that most brands aren’t passion brands (Disney being an obvious exception), and that good content can serve as the “proxy for the passion.” She also argued that content should support users “lifestyle needs” over time, and not only during the period of the transaction.
  • Lionel (@LionelAtDell), chief blogger at Dell, recounted the company’s early efforts in social media and the key lesson his team has learned along the way: “content needs to be shareable.”

On a gorgeous Tuesday spring morning in Boston, the city’s social media community gathered at PUMA City on the waterfront to hear from speakers who are “rocking the boat” in their work .

SMBSA Recap: The Media in Transition

Social Media Club San Antonio Organizers & Speakers photo

LtoR: Jennifer Navarrete, Joe Ruiz, Donna Tuttle, Jennifer Milikien, Elaine Wolff, Bryan Person, Penny Muckleroy, Laura Lorek

In February, Social Media Breakfast San Antonio’s topic was, “The Media in Transition”. We had representatives from the San Antonio Business Journal, San Antonio Express-News, San Antonio Current and KSAT 12 News. Donna Tuttle, Laura Lorek, Elaine Wolff and Joe Ruiz shared how Social Media has changed not only how they gather news, but also how it has impacted their industry.

We captured the conversation on the Social Media Breakfast San Antonio Ustream channel.

The conversation began with stats for the respective publications and broadcasts. It quickly transitioned to how Social Media is changing journalism. There was a lot of energy and excitement around the increased accessibility of news sources and breaking news. At the same time there was the fear factor and monetization discussion. Given the online push, there is a disconnect between ad dollars in print distribution vs. ad dollars in web distribution. How journalists, newspapers and television broadcast news are making the transition along with the real discussion of how to continue to generate revenue.

It would be fair to say that the overall consensus was that journalism as we know it has changed. While it is an exciting time to be part of the “traditional media”, there is a huge shift in how the industry will continue. The distance between news happening in the world and the time it takes to report the news shrinks. The news media are not the only ones being affected by this transition. Education, big business, government and the non-profit sector are all dealing with the fast pace of the internet coupled with the slowing of the economy. These are topics we will be addressing at future Social Media Breakfast San Antonio events.

ShareThis and the Democratization of Influence

Cincinnati Social Media Breakfast Four attendees heard ShareThis CEO Tim Schigel cover topics including how the web, using tools like ShareThis, is democratizing influence.

Are You Hungry For Social Media?

“People Share What Matters”
ShareThis eliminates the need to cut and paste a URL into an email. Analytics show that sharing goes up eight times with this distributed sharing widget on a site. Perhaps that’s because it also allows you to publish the URL to a variety of social networking sites and send it via email or text message to your personal contact list.

As your RSS feeds turn to noise and overwhelm you, ShareThis helps users more easily discern the value of content through their own network. These friend-curated information flows are a prime example of the democratization of influence. As information and viewers of information grow exponentially, our attention is finite, luckily Forrester research shows that 81 percent of people share to help someone else as opposed to simply broadcasting or promoting themselves. This means sharing is as powerful as it is spontaneous and tools like ShareThis will help us sort through the information glut.

The Future of Sharing
Cincinnati Social Media Breakfast attendees previewed the next iteration of ShareThis as well as some future plans. Perhaps the most exciting news is that, as ShareThis ties into analytic providers like Overture and Google Analytics, a metric for influence can be developed.

Yes Virginia – There is Social Media for Social Change

Yes Virginia – There is Social Media for Social Change - #SMB11 Recap
by Bob Collins

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed individuals can change the world.  Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”  - Margaret Mead

In case you hadn’t heard, this week’s Social Media Breakfast in Boston (SMB11) was pretty special.  In keeping with the season, the theme was “Social Media for Social Change,” with three outstanding presentations by some of Boston’s most active Social Media Community leaders’ involved with educating, training and supporting fund raising efforts for non-profits and charitable organizations.

The Presenters

As part of the Social Good themed breakfast – we wanted to showcase in real-time the power of rallying and engaging a networked community. The amazing Beth Kanter introduced Ed Nicholson, director of community & PR at Tyson Foods, into the mix and presented a challenge to Boston’s Social Media Breakfast community.

The Challenge: Tyson Foods will donate 100 lbs. of food (up to a truckload full with 35,000 pounds) to The Greater Boston Food Bank for every single comment left on their Hunger Relief website.  We needed 350 community driven comments to fill the full truck donation. Tyson has been involved in similar such campaign drive in the Austin and Bay Area SMBs.  We just wanted to see if Boston could do a li’l better!

Tyson Foods Tweets about Success of SMB11 Food Drive

Within 3 hours of launching the social media experiment   during the breakfast our local community had rallied their online pals to generate over 550 comments on Tyson’s Hunger Relief website.

Due to the dramatic first wave of comments, which did indeed outpaced the Austin and Bay Area drives, Tyson decided to double-down on their support.  In the end, Tyson Foods has pledged to provide 70,000 lbs. of food — the equivalent of approximately 54,000 meals — to the food bank.

All this Re-Tweeting and blog posting was happening behind the scenes at the breakfast as people mixed, mingled, networked and Gradon Tripp, Frank Days and Beth Kanter delivered some great insights and experienced in building communities, igniting passions and support through social media for social change.

Here are some of the videos, slide decks and blog post recaps coming out of
SMB11
